SHILLONG, Feb 26: The Meghalaya government is now mapping hiking trails as part of a broader effort to promote adventure tourism in the state. By officially documenting routes and enhancing infrastructure, the department aims to attract thrill-seekers while ensuring sustainable tourism development.
Many hiking trails in Meghalaya remain unexplored, leading to breathtaking waterfalls, caves, and viewpoints. To make these trails more accessible, the government is mapping routes, installing clear signage, and categorising trails based on difficulty levels. This will improve the hiking experience while protecting the environment.
Alongside hiking, Meghalaya is also investing heavily in adventure sports. With its hilly terrain, the state is ideal for paragliding, and new sites are being identified for tourists. The famous limestone caves, such as Siju, Mawsmai, and Liat Prah, will have guided caving tours to attract more visitors. Additionally, zip-lining and rock climbing facilities in places like Mawkdok and Sohra are to be improved under this intervention.
