SHILLONG, March 5: The state Assembly on Wednesday passed a government resolution to repeal the Employment of Manual Scavengers and Construction of Dry Latrines (Prohibition) Act, 1993 across the state.
The resolution was moved by Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh, who stated the need to update the legal framework concerning sanitation and labour rights.
The Assembly also adopted another government resolution approving the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Amendment Act, 2024.
The amendment aims to decriminalise provisions of the original Act, facilitate ease of doing business in the country, and streamline the process of nominating the chairman of state pollution control boards.
