SHILLONG, March 6: Residents and traditional heads from the Maweit area in West Khasi Hills met Health and Family Welfare Secretary, Ram Kumar, on Thursday to express their opposition to the Karuna Trust’s decision to remove the doctor and supervisor of Maweit PHC, which caters to around 40 villages in the region.
The delegation, which also included PHC staff members, was led by Mawshynrut MLA, Methodius Dkhar.
Karuna Trust, a volunteer organisation managing several PHCs in West Khasi Hills, including Maweit PHC under the PPP Project (NHM), had made the decision to replace the existing medical staff. However, Kumar informed the delegation that the trust had already appointed a new doctor and supervisor in their place.
Speaking to reporters, youth leader Shemborlang Langrin expressed concern over the impact of the decision, stating that the removal of the doctor and supervisor has affected the local community, as both had been serving at the PHC for the past seven years.
The Sordar of Mawmarim village, Brocklin Lyngdoh, pointed out that a lack of coordination between the Health department and the trust has led to hardships for the villagers. Vice Chairman of Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Maweit Area, Olinroy Nongsiang, also criticised the move, calling the removal of the doctor unjustified, as he had been providing dedicated service to the people for several years.
