SHILLONG, March 9: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Friday strongly objected to the Food Corporation of India (FCI)’s decision to hire a private security agency to provide security services across all its branches in Meghalaya.
In a letter addressed to the General Manager of the FCI office in Mawlai, HYC general secretary Rhembor Saibon expressed strong opposition to the appointment of Prabhat Gurung Security Agency, which operates from Urkaliar, to manage security services in FCI offices and depots across all districts.
According to Saibon, security services in Meghalaya are currently managed by Home Guards volunteers on a contractual basis. He raised concerns that the FCI’s decision would lead to the unemployment of over 50 local indigenous volunteers, severely impacting their families, who have depended on this job for their livelihood for a long time.
“We strongly object to and protest against this decision by your office. We urge you to reconsider it; otherwise, our organisation will be compelled to launch an agitation as a mark of protest,” Saibon stated.
