Mawkyrwat, March 19: The KSU Mawkyllut Unit conducted a cleaning drive to rejuvenate Sala river, the only source of drinking water in Mawkyrwat.
Members of the union collected all the trash—plastic, diapers, clothes and other non-biodegradable wastes littered into the river.
The union expressed deep sorrow over the mental stagnation and irresponsibility of the people of the Mawkyrwat area in terms of cleanliness and the conservation of the environment by polluting the Sala River.
Union General Secretary Bennison Shangdiar said despite several warnings being issued by the union and the Dorbar Shnong of Mawkyrwat against polluting the river, all types of garbage are still being dumped into the river by those who come to wash their clothes in the river.
“This shows that the people lack basic civic sense. They do not care about the environment by throwing all types of garbage including perishable and non-perishable garbage in the river,” Shangdiar said. The unionurged the public to respect and maintain the environment, especially the water sources.
‘Sala River is one of the sources of drinking water for the Greater Mawkyrwat Water Supply Schemes which covers eight villages’.
