EFLU marks 50th milestone in NE

SHILLONG, March 20: The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) Shillong marked its 50 years of imparting education in English and foreign languages in the Northeast with a grand golden jubilee celebration on Thursday. The event took place at the university’s campus, bringing together academicians, dignitaries, and students.
Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, IP Mukerji, graced the occasion as the chief guest, delivering a thought-provoking address on the significance of the English language in today’s interconnected world. He highlighted how English has evolved into a bridge between cultures, facilitating global communication and opportunities. He also emphasised the role of institutions like EFLU in equipping students with linguistic proficiency, enabling them to thrive in the international landscape.
The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor and the distinguished guest at the event, Prof N Nagaraju, reflected on the university’s journey over the past five decades. He acknowledged the institution’s contributions in promoting linguistic expertise and cross-cultural understanding among students. Stressing the importance of multilingualism, he pointed out that in an era of globalisation, proficiency in multiple languages can open doors to vast academic and professional opportunities.
He also stressed on how the faculty members also are to undertake research projects.
Later in the day, a panel discussion titled ‘Interstitiality of Language, Literature, and Communication in the NEP 2020 Era: Philosophies, Pedagogies, and Representation’ saw academicians and students engage in insightful discussions. Scholars and language experts explored the evolving role of language education, delving into the impact of technology on learning methodologies and the increasing demand for language skills in the professional domain, particularly in the context of NEP 2020.
EFLU Shillong, known for its exclusive focus on English and foreign languages, has been a cornerstone of linguistic education in the region. The university offers courses in Russian, German, French, Spanish, and other languages, making it a unique institution not only in the Northeast but also in the South Asian region. Over the years, it has nurtured a generation of language enthusiasts, translators, educators, and global communicators. The celebrations concluded with a cultural programme.
The event was also attended by EFLU’s Lucknow Campus’s Director Rajneesh Arora, and Registrar in-charge, Prof K Narasimha Rao, among other notable attendees.
