SHILLONG, March 21: A debate covering two key provisions of the Indian Constitution — Article 371 and the Sixth Schedule — saw constructive exchanges among the panelists, which included VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, Advocates Erwin K Syiem Sutnga and Robert June Kharjahrin. The debate was followed by an engaging interactive session with the audience.
It is pertinent to note that the discussion on Article 371 and the Sixth Schedule has gained renewed interest in light of growing demands for the implementation of Article 371 to shield the state from central laws and enhance protections for the tribal population.
The debate was organised by the Department of Political Science, Sankardev College, Shillong, in collaboration with Q&A Production Channel, at the college auditorium on Friday. It was moderated by Dr. Benjamin F. Lyngdoh, Associate Professor, Department of Tourism, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong.
The event began with a welcome address by the college principal, Dr Eureka FP Lyngdoh, while Dareen S Lyngdoh, Head of the Department of Political Science, delivered the vote of thanks. Meban Kharmyndai also spoke on behalf of the Q&A Production team.
The programme was attended by several dignitaries, including Executive Member of KHADC, P Sohkhlet, and MDC Kitborlang Syiem along with the president and members of the college’s governing body, invited guests, faculty members, and students from various colleges and universities in Shillong.
