Shillong, March 26: Leader of Opposition in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Titosstarwell Chyne, expressed disappointment on Wednesday over the absence of an obituary reference in the agenda for the first day of the council’s budget session.
Raising the issue in the House, Chyne emphasized that it is customary to include an obituary reference at the start of every session. “We were unable to pay tribute to former Sohra MDC, W. Mathiw Mawdkhap, who passed away on March 22,” he stated.
He highlighted that Mawdkhap had served as the MDC for the Sohra constituency from 1979 to 1983. Chyne added that it is standard practice for the Executive Committee (EC) to introduce an official condolence resolution in the House to honor deceased former members.
Chyne also noted that the VPP-led EC had recognized Mawdkhap’s contributions during his funeral, identifying him as a member of their party.
“Such an oversight has never occurred in the history of the Council,” he remarked.
However, he acknowledged that the new EC may have unintentionally omitted the obituary reference since this was their first session. He urged KHADC Chairman Strong Pillar Kharjana to include the tribute on the final day of the budget session, scheduled for Friday.
“I also appeal to the CEM to table an official condolence message in honor of the late MDC from Sohra,” he added.
In response, Chairman Kharjana apologised for the omission, clarifying that it was unintentional. He also encouraged members to inform his office if they receive news of any former member’s passing.
Kharjana assured the House that the obituary reference would be included in the agenda on the final day of the session.
