NONGPOH, March 28: Residents of Nongrah Pyllun staged a protest march on Friday, condemning the brutal assault, which was perpetrated on a pregnant woman, Ellana Lyngdoh Mawphlang, near Umroi airport on March 19.
Mawphlang was assaulted by one Kyrshanlang Marngar, who struck her with a broken beer bottle and a stone, leaving her severely injured. The assailant also snatched her purse while she was on her way to work at Umroi airport around 8:10 am.
Leading the protest on Friday was village headman P. Dkhar, accompanied by women leaders, including T. Makhroh.
The demonstration saw participation from community elders, youths and students from four village schools.
During the march, the headman and other community leaders strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an act of brutality, which, they added, has instilled fear among residents, particularly women and children.
They protesters urged the public to refrain from criminal activities that tarnish the village’s reputation and stressed the importance of collective efforts to curb crimes.
The leaders also warned that strict action would be taken against anyone engaging in criminal activities in the future. Further, they called on residents to stand united against crime and substance abuse, including alcohol and drugs, which they believe contribute to rising lawlessness in the area.
The village leaders also highlighted the increasing crime rate, which, they added, has made residents feel unsafe even while walking on village roads.
