NCC confers NE’s best ANO award to city college lecturer
SHILLONG, March 30: The National Cadet Corps (NCC) has awarded Captain Jag Prasad Uppadhya, Associate NCC Officer (ANO) from Buddha Bhanu Saraswati (BBS) College, Shillong, the title of Best ANO (Male) in Meghalaya and the Best ANO in the Northeastern Region. The recognition was conferred recently during the NCC, North East Region’s annual award function in Guwahati for the training year 2024-25, which celebrated the achievements of NCC cadets, staff, and educational institutions from across the region. Captain Uppadhya, serving under Meghalaya BN NCC Shillong, Shillong Group, was lauded for his unwavering dedication, exemplary leadership, and commitment to mentoring cadets. Meanwhile, the BBS College, in a statement has expressed immense pride in his achievement, acknowledging his contributions to both the NCC and the institution. “This recognition reflects the officer’s unwavering dedication, exemplary leadership and commitment to the development of our cadets. The college appreciates his outstanding contribution to the NCC and the college community,” a statement from the college said.
Radiologists, resident doctors attend NEIGRIHMS workshop
SHILLONG, March 30: More than 30 radiologists and resident doctors from across Meghalaya conglomerated for a Continuing Medical Education (CME)-cum-Workshop on ‘Image-Guided Tissue Sampling Techniques – Principles and Recent Advances’ at NEIGRIHMS on Saturday. Organised by the Department of Radiology & Imaging, the workshop featured a live demonstration conducted by Dr. Binoy Kumar Choudhury, Senior Consultant at the State Cancer Institute, GMCH, Guwahati, and a globally recognised expert in CT and ultrasonography-guided biopsies. Speaking at the event, NEIGRIHMS Director Prof. Nalin Mehta emphasised the importance of localised cancer care. “Given the cancer burden of Meghalaya and Northeast at large, NEIGRIHMS with its Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) has already taken initiative in making sure that patients don’t have to travel far and wide for receiving a tissue diagnosis,” he said. Prof. Mehta also commended the department for organising such workshops to enhance skills and knowledge among doctors in the region. On the other hand, Prof. C. Daniala, Head of the Department of Radiology & Imaging, highlighted the need for a unified approach to patient care among radiologists in Meghalaya. “We are a growing community of radiologists in Meghalaya and need to be united in certain practices pertaining to patient care. NEIGRIHMS already has an established Radiation Oncology and Surgical Oncology departments that need support from trained Oncoradiologists,” Prof. Daniala said. Organising Secretary and Additional, Prof. Donboklang Lynser, hailed the event as a success, stating that such academic initiatives would significantly benefit patients in Meghalaya by improving diagnostic and treatment capabilities.
WKH college holds awareness on drug abuse prevention
SHILLONG, March 30: In a concerted effort to protect the youths from the dangers of substance abuse, Nongstoin College recently organised a lecture on ‘Say “NO” to Narcotic and Sports Performance-Enhancing Drugs’. Addressing an auditorium filled with students, Commandant SHQ SSB, Bezpara (Assam), Parag Chaturvedi, highlighted the growing crisis of drug abuse and its far-reaching consequences. He stressed the urgent need for awareness, particularly among students who are highly susceptible to the influence of addictive substances. He also warned of the devastating effects of drug abuse, including severe physical health issues, long-term mental disorders, economic hardship and social alienation. The event saw the presence of key dignitaries, including West Khasi Hills Additional Deputy Commissioner H. Kerwood Thabah, Nongstoin College principal Dr. I. Mawthoh, et al. Addressing an audience of 164 students from Nongstoin College and St. Francis College, they stressed the importance of making informed and healthy life choices. They encouraged young people to engage in positive activities such as physical exercise, nutritious eating, creative pursuits, and meaningful social interactions. For those battling addiction, they emphasised the importance of seeking professional help through rehabilitation programs and support groups. The event culminated in a solemn oath-taking ceremony, where all attendees pledged to reject substance abuse and actively spread awareness within their communities.
