SHILLONG, April 4: Inspector General of BSF, Meghalaya Frontier, OP Upadhyay, on Friday apprised Chief Minister Conrad Sangma of key issues concerning border security, cross-border movement and the need for strengthened coordination between the BSF and state agencies.
The IG BSF met the chief minister during a review meeting chaired by Conrad, where he expressed gratitude for the active support extended by the state administration and police.
He briefed the chief minister on the prevailing security situation along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya and highlighted the BSF’s ongoing efforts to curb trans-border crimes, smuggling and illegal infiltration.
During the meeting, the chief minister acknowledged the critical role played by the BSF in safeguarding the international border and ensuring the safety of citizens. He stressed the importance of continued collaboration, intelligence sharing and community engagement to maintain peace and stability in the region.
It may be mentioned that the meeting also touched upon developmental challenges faced by border villages. Both sides discussed avenues to enhance coordination between the BSF, state agencies and local communities to promote development and security.
BSF thwarts infiltration bid
Troops of BSF, Meghalaya Frontier, on Thursday successfully apprehended four Bangladeshi nationals and one Indian tout, attempting to infiltrate into Indian territory near the Indo-Bangladesh border.
According to a statement here, the personnel of 4th Battalion BSF, acting on specific intelligence regarding illegal crossings in the region, swiftly launched an operation to intercept the infiltrators. During the operation, BSF personnel detained the four Bangladeshi nationals along with an Indian tout, a resident of East Khasi Hills district, who was facilitating the illegal entry.
The apprehended individuals, along with other recovered items, have been handed over to Pynursla Police Station for further investigation and necessary legal action.
