SHILLONG, April 4: Suspended North Shillong MLA, Adelbert Nongrum, on Friday informed that Meghalaya Industries Development Corporation (MIDC) Chairman, James PK Sangma, has denied any land acquisition by the corporation in Ri-Bhoi district in recent years.
Nongrum had met the MIDC Chairman in the wake of opposition from the Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CoRP) to a proposed land acquisition by MIDC at Umsiang, near the inter-state border with Assam. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Nongrum said Sangma clarified that MIDC had not acquired any land in Ri-Bhoi over the past five years. However, he added that the corporation did confirm land acquisitions in earlier years.
According to Nongrum, the MIDC Chairman also stated that there are currently no plans to acquire land in any part of Meghalaya.
Earlier, CoRP working president, Pateng Myrsing, flayed the state government for its alleged move to acquire 300 acres of land at an estimated cost of Rs 100 crore.
He claimed the process was carried out without consulting the local populace, with discussions limited to traditional heads of the area.
