SHILLONG, April 7: On the occasion of Shad Suk Mynsiem, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced the establishment of an Indigenous Cultural Centre with a sanctioned budget of approximately Rs 15 crore. The foundation stone for the project is expected to be laid in May.
“We have always stated that the cultural aspect of our traditions needs to be preserved and promoted. It is in line with that thought process that we are having the Indigenous Cultural Centre,” said the chief minister. Although the foundation was initially planned to be laid this month, Sangma noted that April is considered inauspicious, therefore making the shift to May.
Describing it as a long-pending demand, Sangma said, “We’re very happy. It’s been a long-pending demand from our community of the Seng Khasi’s to have this cultural centre, and I’m happy that finally we’re able to do this.”
The project will not be limited to one community. “We are supporting and putting up different cultural centres — from larger ones to even smaller centres. Recently, I was in the Karbi area where I announced 50 lakh for their cultural centre. I have given support to the Rabha community, the Koch, Hajong community… different communities that are working towards preserving their culture.”
Highlighting the nature of the upcoming centre, he said, “We want it to be very interactive and technology-based. I hope it will become a good project.”
While the current initiative involves a new infrastructure, Sangma also expressed interest in upgrading the existing facilities around the site. “Even this field, the waiting field, has to be renovated. It has got its own significance and a lot of tourists are coming here. So, the sitting areas can be expanded and more space can be created for dance performances.”
