Ri-Bhoi police stations to have Community Liaison Groups
SHILLONG, April 15: The Ri-Bhoi police have issued orders for the constitution of a Community Liaison Group (CLG) in each police station and a Village Defence Party (VDP) in every village across the district. Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police, Vivekanand Singh, said that active public participation is crucial in the prevention of crime and the maintenance of law and order, which is essential to ensure peace and tranquillity in the district. To achieve this objective and in compliance with Section 64 of the Meghalaya Police Act, 2010, all Officers-in-Charge of police stations, outposts, beat houses, Police Investigation Centres (PICs), and Assistant Deputy Commissioners (ADCs) have been directed to submit proposals for the formation of CLGs within their respective jurisdictions. Each CLG will consist of respectable local residents with unimpeachable character and clean antecedents. Members may include retired public servants, heads of educational institutions and other community representatives. Their role will be to advise the police on matters of public interest and assist in improving policing in the area. The CLGs will also help identify both existing and emerging policing needs specific to their areas. These inputs will be considered by the Officer-in-Charge while preparing the annual policing strategy and action plan for their jurisdiction. The groups are expected to meet as frequently as required and at least once every quarter. SP Singh informed that the entire exercise is expected to take approximately 45 to 60 days. “We are taking the fight against drug peddling, crime against women and children, and other crimes to the grassroots level,” the SP said.

28 killed in Ri-Bhoi road accidents so far in 2025, informs SP
SHILLONG, April 15: As many as 28 people have lost their lives in tragic road accidents across Ri-Bhoi district so far this year. Notably, major state roads such as the Umiam-Jorabat Expressway and the Shillong Bypass pass through the district, contributing to heavy vehicular movement in the region. Commenting on the situation, Ri-Bhoi Superintendent of Police, Vivekanand Singh Rathore, said the police are in constant coordination with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to install speed limit boards along the highways in the district. It was also revealed that most of the accidents occur along the Umiam, Umsning and Umroi stretches. To curb speeding, the police plan to place barricades in areas like Nongpoh, Umsning and other stretches where drivers tend to over-speed due to straight roads. According to the SP, the Ri-Bhoi police have also intensified enforcement measures by conducting regular checks, including for drunken driving, at various locations. “We are also educating truck drivers on the importance of lane driving and to ensure that they don’t park their trucks in sharp curves,” he said.
