Gurudwara vandalised in Canada’s Vancouver
Ottawa, April 20: A gurudwara in Canada’s Vancouver has been vandalised with pro-Khalistan graffiti, with its leaders blaming a small group of Sikh separatists for the act, according to a media report. The local police said it was investigating graffiti sprayed on Saturday at the Ross Street Gurdwara, Vancouver Sun reported. Vancouver Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Steve Addison said Saturday that police are looking into the graffiti at the gurdwara, the newspaper said. He said the police do not have a suspect. The Khalsa Diwan Society, which runs the Ross Street Gurdwara, blamed the vandalism on a small group of Sikh separatists advocating Khalistan. (PTI)
Sri Lanka police launches probe on Buddha relic image
Colombo, April 20: Sri Lankan police on Sunday said that an investigation has begun to determine how a purported image of a sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha was captured after the photo went viral on social media. No cameras or mobile phones were allowed in the inner sanctum of the Temple of the Tooth during a rare exposition, which started on Friday in the central town of Kandy after a gap of 16 years. The investigation would reveal its veracity, the police said. Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya said preliminary investigations are underway to determine when the image was captured. He added that the Criminal Investigation Department’s assistance would be sought if required. Photography or videography of the sacred tooth relic is strictly prohibited. Tens of thousands of Buddhist devotees are arriving to venerate the relic, with queues forming several miles away. (PTI)
B’desh seeks Interpol Red Notice against Sheikh Hasina
Dhaka, April 20: Bangladesh has requested Interpol to issue a red notice against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 11 others in connection with a case alleging conspiracy to overthrow the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, according to local media reports. According to reports, the request was submitted by the Bangladesh Police Headquarters amid an ongoing investigation into charges of inciting civil war and plotting to unseat the transitional administration. Leading Bangladeshi daily, The Dhaka Tribune, quoted Assistant Inspector General (Media) Enamul Haque Sagor as confirming the development. The red notice, once issued, would enable law enforcement agencies globally to locate and provisionally detain the accused individuals pending extradition or other legal actions. (IANS)
Awami League takes out flash procession in Khulna
Dhaka, April 20: Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League staged a flash procession on Sunday morning in Khulna city, following the interim government’s orders to prevent such processions. The rally organised under the banner of Bangladesh Awami League, Khulna District Unit, was the first such demonstration in the area since the fall of the Awami League government last year, local media reported.
