SHILLONG, April 21: The Office of the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Sohra, has prohibited the dumping of waste and other discharge near Tiew-u-Jir-Bah, an area at the centre of a land dispute between Mawkisyiem and Nongrim villages.
According to the order, the aforesaid land, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Sohra Civil Sub-Division, recently saw the construction of a dispensary by the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department on a plot donated by Nongrim’s Dorbar Shnong. However, the ownership of the land remains contested.
What has raised further concern is that the area reportedly serves as a drinking water source for multiple government offices and nearby villages. There is apprehension that the dumping of waste—whether domestic, medical, or otherwise—by offices or households could contaminate the water source and endanger public health.
To prevent such a situation, the Office of the Sohra SDO has prohibited all dumping of waste, spoil and any kind of discharge on the hill slopes and surrounding areas near Tiew-u-Jir-Bah.
