SHILLONG/JOWAI, April 22: The Meghalaya government will soon begin replacing rusted electric poles and conductors across the state to ensure public safety.
Power Minister AT Mondal stated that the replacement of electric poles is an ongoing process, and the department takes action wherever necessary. He added that both poles and aerial bundled conductors will be replaced as required.
Citing a recent incident where an elephant was electrocuted near the Assam-Meghalaya border, the minister responded to concerns over unsafe wiring. He assured that the government takes immediate action whenever such incidents are reported.
Mondal also reiterated that there will be no scheduled load-shedding in the state, adding that Meghalaya is in a comfortable position, particularly with the onset of the monsoon season.
Call to replace damaged pole in Mawlyngngad
The Khasi Jaintia Youth and Students Union (KJYSU), on Tuesday, submitted a petition and held discussions with the Chief Engineer (Distribution) of the Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Limited at his office in Lumjingshai, Shillong.
In the petition, the organisation urged the officer of the department to urgently replace an old electric pole in Mawlyngngad village, which falls under the Mawryngkneng Sub-Division.
According to the union’s findings, the electric pole in question is made of wood and has become very old. It is situated near the main road and close to residential homes, and it is on the verge of collapsing. As such, it poses a serious risk and could fall at any time, potentially causing injuries or unfortunate incidents to residents and passersby.
During the meeting, the union urged the department to take immediate action by replacing the pole with a new and more durable one. In response, the senior officer assured the union leaders that he would forward the written request to the Executive Engineer responsible for the area and would see to it that the issue is addressed and the replacement done as soon as possible.
Following the submission of the petition and the discussion, the union expressed hope that the department will take the matter seriously and act swiftly for the safety and well-being of the residents in the area.
