PHULBARI, April 30: Roynath D Sangma, a five-time MDC from the Batabari constituency (GHADC) of West Garo Hills (WGH) passed away on Tuesday, after a bout of illness left him hospitalised. He was sick and was shifted earlier this week.
Roynath passed away in the morning at the Apollo Excelcare Hospital in Guwahati after which his mortal remains were brought back to his home near Phulbari.
Power Minister AT Mondal, who was closely supported by Roynath during his campaign in the last general elections in 2023, expressed sadness at the demise of the late leader. He was also part of the convoy that helped in bringing the MDC’s mortal remains back to his home at Bandangre.
Roynath was a longtime supporter of late PA Sangma and followed him into the NPP. He last contested on an NPP ticket in 2021 but lost. He earlier lost to Mark Goera Marak in the 2015 election.
“This is a very sad day for the people of Phulbari and the plain belt. He was an excellent leader and an even better human being. Our heart goes out to his family and we hope they get through this tough phase together. He was widely respected in all communities in the plain belt region,” said Mondal, while expressing his condolences.
Roynath won four consecutive elections from the year 1994 before losing in 2015. He was later nominated as an MDC. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. A huge gathering of bereaved on Wednesday paid their last respects to the former leader.
Sangma held executive member posts in various departments in the GHADC.
