SHILLONG, May 5: The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) has suspended the Consent to Operate of RNB Carbide & Ferro Alloys Pvt. Ltd. for 45 days following violations of pollution control norms.
The unit, located at Umiam Industrial Estate in Ri Bhoi district, manufactures ferro silicon at a capacity of 10,950 metric tonnes per annum.
According to the Board, a recent inspection on April 24 revealed heavy emissions from the plant’s stack and irregular data transmission from its Online Continuous Emission Monitoring System (OCEMS).
While the pollution control device (PCD) was found to be operational, the unit had informed authorities that an overhaul of the system was underway and requested 45 days to complete it.
Under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, the Board has suspended the unit’s operating consent until the PCD is fully overhauled, tested, and a compliance report is submitted. Failure to meet these conditions may lead to legal action.
The plant’s last consent renewal was valid till March 31, 2026.
