SHILLONG, May 6: After the announcement of HSSLC exam results, the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) will retake the limelight in Meghalaya, albeit students in the state have the option of enrolling into colleges that will be affiliated with Captain Williamson Sangma State University.
Around 22 colleges in Meghalaya have so far agreed to affiliate with the state university.
Addressing concerns about the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), Education Minister Rakkam Sangma on Tuesday said that students in the state are well prepared to face it. He assured that the government would coordinate efforts to ensure that students do not face difficulties while appearing for the exam.
Also, the government is optimistic about its preparedness to accommodate all students who have cleared their examinations.
On being asked why many students still opt to pursue higher studies in other states, Sangma said it is natural for some to seek more exposure outside the state. “It’s a matter of choice for students and parents,” he said, adding that the government is engaging with institutions to ensure they do not charge exorbitant fees.
Commenting on the improvement in the recent SSLC and HSSLC results, Sangma credited the hard work of teachers, students, and parents for the success.
“It is a good sign that we are moving forward,” he said, adding that the department, through the district administrations, has reached out to underperforming schools.
“One ADC was designated as the in-charge of education. The officer visited schools to motivate them, and we also arranged supplementary classes and provided books,” Sangma added.
Sangma also revealed that out of approximately 70 colleges in the state, 22 have agreed to the affiliation, and the necessary formalities are currently under way.
Meanwhile, all government schools now have full-fledged infrastructure, the minister said. Over 90 per cent of secondary schools have been upgraded to higher secondary level, and a few new colleges have been established.
