SHILLONG, May 8: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Thursday stressed the importance of national unity amid ongoing tensions with Pakistan.
“We need to stand united with the government, the nation and the public at large,” said MPCC Secretary Manuel Badwar, when asked about the escalating situation with Pakistan.
Badwar asserted that the government must demonstrate its resolve in handling Pakistan. “We should not be bullied or tolerate the proxy war being waged by Pakistan on Indian soil. This must not be accepted under any circumstances,” he said.
When questioned about the need to strengthen security along the international border with Bangladesh, Badwar expressed concern about Bangladesh’s political trajectory.
“In my view, Bangladesh is increasingly becoming a rogue state due to its lack of effective governance. We’re also hearing irresponsible statements from some of their key leaders,” he said.
He warned that such developments should not be taken lightly, alleging that certain actors in Bangladesh may be receiving external funding, potentially from China, in pursuit of economic advancement.
Badwar emphasised that Meghalaya must remain vigilant and firm in the face of anti-national activities. “No matter what kind of statements are made, we should not dismiss them. As a state, we must ensure such threats are addressed seriously.”
Highlighting the need for stronger border security, he acknowledged the role of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the army, stating both forces are well-prepared and alert.
“There are ongoing discussions about accelerating the pace of border fencing. We must seriously consider this, especially given that we do not have a stable neighbour. From an administrative standpoint, it’s a volatile situation, and that poses real danger,” Badwar added.
