Depressed over 61 pc in 10th result, student hangs himself
Kota, May 14: A student took his life after getting depressed over his CBSE Class 10 board exam results, the police said on Wednesday. The student, identified as Anikesh, hailing from Jehanabad, Bihar, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his PG room here on Tuesday evening. Anikesh went into depression after the results were announced on Tuesday, in which he scored 61 per cent marks, way below his expectations. Anikesh’s mother tried to console him but to no avail. When she stepped out for a while, he took the extreme step, a police officer said. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital where he died during treatment on Wednesday. No suicide note has been recovered. (PTI)
Drugs worth Rs 10 cr seized in Maharashtra
Pune, May 14: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized narcotic drugs including hashish worth around Rs 10.3 crore at the Pune airport and in Mumbai, officials said on Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, DRI’s Mumbai Zonal Unit intercepted two passengers when they landed in Pune from Bangkok on Monday. Airtight pouches of 9.86 kg of hydroponic weed, a form of marijuana, was recovered from their baggage, a DRI release said. In a follow-up operation in Mumbai, a man who was to receive the drugs was arrested. The search at his premises led to the recovery of 478 gm of narcotic substances, including hashish and hydroponic weed, it added. All three persons — their identities not disclosed — were arrested under the NDPS Act, the DRI said. (PTI)
Woman killed while resisting rape attempt
Rajkot, May 14: A man has been arrested for allegedly killing a 53-year-old nurse at her home after she resisted his rape attempt in Gujarat’s Rajkot city, police said on Wednesday. The incident took place in the city’s Rushikesh Nagar locality a little after midnight on Tuesday, Assistant Commissioner of Police B J Chaudhary said. The accused was identified as Kanji Vanja (34). “The victim worked as a nurse at a government-run cancer treatment facility. She had been transferred a few months ago from Ahmedabad and lived alone in a rented house,” the official said. Around 12:45 am on Tuesday, the accused barged into her house. The woman confronted him with a knife and slashed his hand and a leg, but he managed to snatch it from her and allegedly stabbed her in the chest, said the official. Vanja lived in the same neighbourhood but the two had never talked to each other before, Chaudhary said. (PTI)
Amritsar hooch tragedy: Death toll rises to 23
AMRITSAR, May 14: The death toll in the hooch tragedy in Amritsar climbed to 23 on Wednesday, with two more residents succumbing in the Majitha area, while the number of arrests rose to 16 after two persons were held in Delhi, police said on Wednesday. Both the deceased hailed from Bhangwan village, they said. Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney said the death toll has reached 23. Most of the victims of the tragedy were daily wagers. Two persons, Ravinder Jain and Rishabh Jain, were arrested from North Delhi on Wednesday, the police said, adding they have so far arrested 16 people. (PTI)
