One killed in attack on pro-army rally in Pakistan
Islamabad, May 14: A suspected militant on a motorcycle threw a hand grenade at participants of a pro-army rally in southwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing at least one person and wounding 10 others, police and hospital officials said. The attack occurred in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, said local police chief Mohammad Malghani. He said about 150 people in cars and on motorcycles were heading to a hockey ground in the city for a government-organised event to celebrate the military’s recent retaliatory strikes inside India when the man threw a grenade at them. Wasim Baig, a spokesman at the Civil Hospital, said at least two of those wounded were in critical condition. (AP)

Gunmen kill four drivers in Balochistan
KARACHI, May 14: Four truck drivers were abducted and shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province. The drivers were transporting LPG imported from Iran when masked armed men intercepted their trucks in the Ahmedwal area on the Quetta-Taftan highway. The bodies were later identified as those of the abducted truck drivers from Rahimyar Khan and Pakpattan in the Punjab province. All four men died from multiple bullet injuries after being shot from a close range. This is not the first time separatist groups have targeted workers from other provinces. In February, gunmen stopped a passenger bus and shot dead eight Punjabi passengers. In March, four laborers were gunned down in Kalat district. (PTI)

Three arrested over suspected Ukraine bomb parcel plot
BERLIN, May 14: Three Ukrainian nationals have been arrested in Germany and Switzerland on suspicion of agreeing to send parcels containing explosive or incendiary devices from Germany to Ukraine, possibly at the behest of people acting for Russia. The men are suspected of acting as secret agents for the purpose of sabotage and agreeing to commit arson and bring about an explosion. Western officials have accused Russia and its proxies of staging dozens of attacks and other incidents across Europe since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago. Two of the men, Vladyslav T. and Daniil B., were arrested in different parts of Germany, while the third, Yevhen B., was arrested in Switzerland. Prosecutors did not elaborate further on what was in the packages or how and where they were dispatched. (AP)

Dhaka varsity student stabbed to death
DHAKA, May 14: Shahriar Alam Samya, a student at Dhaka University, was stabbed to death after an altercation. Protesting leaders demanded the resignation of the university’s Vice-Chancellor and Proctor, accusing them of failing to ensure student safety. The incident has sparked a surge in student protest movements in Bangladesh, highlighting a deteriorating law and order situation. (IANS)
