SHILLONG, May 15: The state government has approved an additional Rs 15 crore for the redevelopment and renovation of the Iewduh Market in the state.
The state government had, earlier, sanctioned Rs 6 crore for the beautification efforts, in addition to Rs 10 crore provided by the North Eastern Council.
“Work is already in progress, including clearing footpaths, improving drainage systems, and removing old pipes. The government has finalised another Rs 15 crore for further development, with renovation work planned for the next three to six months,” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Thursday.
Describing Iewduh as the “heart and soul” of farmers and small business owners, Sangma lamented the years of neglect the market has endured, despite its importance as a hub of daily activity.
The aim is to transform the market into a cleaner, more vibrant, functional, and accessible space that better serves local vendors, shoppers, and tourists, he said.
The foundation stone for the Iewduh redevelopment project was laid by the Chief Minister in March 2024.
Currently, the market faces issues such as poor drainage, and overcrowding. Cleanliness remains a major concern, with the market often resembling a dumping ground by evening.
Broken pavements and exposed drainage pipes further diminish Iewduh’s traditional charm.
The Chief Minister, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, and Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh are scheduled to inspect Iewduh, Iew Mawlong, Khlieh Iew, and Motphran on May 19.
