SHILLONG, May 19: Even as COVID cases continue to surge in some Asian countries, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday said Meghalaya’s healthcare system is well-prepared to combat any situation.
She told The Shillong Times that robust surveillance and response mechanisms are in place. The government is closely monitoring the situation and it is ready to implement necessary measures as and when required, she said.
Lyngdoh also said that as per the latest data received from the Ministry of Health, there are currently 93 active COVID cases in India. Most of these cases are mild and being managed effectively within the healthcare infrastructure, she added.
The Ministry has not issued any new public health warnings so far, indicating that the situation is under control.
Advising citizens to remain vigilant, practice good hygiene, wear masks in crowded places, and stay home if feeling unwell, Lyngdoh said vaccination remains the most effective tool against the pandemic.
The new wave of COVID has emerged in Southeast Asia – from Hong Kong and Singapore to Thailand. Most of the cases in the surge are being driven by the Omicron variant JN.1 and its related descendants. Singapore saw over 14,000 cases early this month, with similar a surge seen in Hong Kong and Thailand. There has been an uptick of the cases in India in recent days.
