SHILLONG, May 22: Celebrating the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 2025, Meghalaya turned the spotlight on its local champions of conservation during a vibrant state-level event held at the U Soso Tham Auditorium.
This year’s global theme ‘Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development’ resonated deeply with the state’s ongoing commitment to preserving its ecological wealth.
The event, organised jointly by the Forest & Environment department and the Meghalaya Biodiversity Board (MBB), brought together key policymakers, scientists and community leaders.
A key highlight of the celebration was the release of a documentary showcasing grassroots conservation success stories led by local Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs).
The event also featured the launch of a visually rich coffee table book, Caves of Meghalaya, alongside posters designed to spread biodiversity awareness.
The most anticipated moment came with the presentation of the State Biodiversity Awards 2025 to recognise the outstanding efforts in preserving and sustainably using bioresources.
Mawtneng BMC from Bhoirymbong Block, Ri-Bhoi District, was awarded Best Biodiversity Management Committee for its innovative, community-led practices.
In a powerful acceptance speech, the BMC’s secretary accentuated the importance of local knowledge and collective  responsibility in protecting Meghalaya’s biodiversity.
Meanwhile, Phlangwanbroi BMC and Kmawan Rum BMC from Mawsynram Block in East Khasi Hills were jointly awarded for Best Conservation and Sustainable Use of Bioresources.
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Biodiversity Board, since its inception in 2012, has spearheaded annual IDB celebrations across the state, aligning local efforts with global frameworks such as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted at COP15.
The programme was attended by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife & Biodiversity), HC Chaudhary, as the chief guest, alongside other dignitaries including Prof. SK Barik of NEHU and senior IFS officers, Pawan K. Agrahari and R. Nainamalai.
