SHILLONG, June 5: As GHADC elections beckon, a buoyant NPP has dared the VPP to contest the GHADC elections.
“If you want to grow, you should be accepted by one and all. We should not leave any room for criticism. I feel they should not have any boundaries and lines drawn. They should also fight the upcoming GHADC polls,” said NPP leader and Rongara-Siju MLA, Rakkam A Sangma, throwing down the gauntlet with a smile.
Beaming with confidence with the current form of the party, he said with a grin, “It will be a huge challenge for them, but the challenge will benefit them. They should look at the entire State. If they have the vision to represent the State and to become a State party, they should display their colours to every individual and every nook and corner”. The VPP, which has found its footing in the Khasi Hills, is rumoured to be slowly making its presence felt in the Garo Hills as well. But Sangma believes it’s time they came out in full public view and batted across the field not just the home turf.
“Our friends in VPP want to contest in district council as mature politicians. If you are a party, you should look at the whole of Meghalaya. They should contest the district council elections. If they do, the public perception of them being a party confined to one particular region will be removed,” he added.
And in true sporting spirit, when asked about the NPP’s own readiness, Sangma slipped into classic cricketing rhythm: “We are at the ground already and we are preparing. We know the political pitch of the state and according to the pitch and outfield, we will put up our players.”
As the GHADC polls draw closer, the question is clear — will the VPP take the crease, or remain in the commentary box?
