Locals breathe easy after water supply restored in Cantt area
SHILLONG, June 7: Residents of Shillong Cantonment area heaved a sigh of relief on Friday as water supply was finally restored after a disruption lasting 10 to 11 days. The prolonged water crisis was caused by a damaged water pipeline under the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department, which had broken down late last month. During the period of disruption, many residents were forced to buy water at exorbitant prices, while others had to rely on friends and relatives from nearby localities for their daily needs. The damaged pipeline was finally repaired on Friday evening. In the meantime, the Cantonment Board had arranged for water tankers to help mitigate the situation. Additionally, intermittent heavy rainfall during the period provided some respite, as residents were able to use rainwater for household purposes.
