SHILLONG, June 8: An Assistant Horticulture Inspector (AHI) has a narrow escape after being allegedly abducted by some Bangladeshi nationals at Muktapur in West Jaintia Hills near the Indo-Bangladesh border.
According to details provided by the police, three Bangladeshi men stopped him while he was riding his motorcycle, threatened him with a “dao” and abducted him.
The kidnappers later contacted the victim’s family using his mobile phone and demanded a ransom of Rs 5 lakh for his safe release.
Police informed that the official was initially kept in a forested area within the Indian territory after which they crossed the border into Bangladesh with him taking advantage of the prevailing darkness.
Once inside Bangladesh, he was moved between locations with at least two Bangladeshi nationals accompanying him throughout.
They also untied his hands and removed the cloth covering his face.
However, the abductors changed their approach and handed the victim a torchlight and promised to help him return to India.
The official decided to find his way back on his own, crossing back into Indian territory and reporting the incident to a nearby BSF camp.
