SHILLONG, June 12: The VPP has yet to officially inform Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma about its decision to expel North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum from the party for a period of three years.
It may be noted that Nongrum, one of the party’s four MLAs, was suspended in March for alleged anti-party activities. Sources told The Shillong Times on Thursday that the Speaker’s office has not received any formal communication from the VPP leadership regarding Nongrum’s suspension.
Responding to queries, the source confirmed that, as per official Assembly records, Nongrum continues to remain a VPP MLA. A source stated that the Assembly Speaker will take appropriate action once he receives an official communication from the party concerning Nongrum’s suspension.
The source also emphasised the importance of the party notifying the Speaker, especially for seating arrangements when the House is in session.
It was further clarified that suspension from a political party does not affect a legislator’s status as a member of the Assembly.
“Suspension is an internal matter of the party. Membership in the legislature remains unaffected unless the provisions of the anti-defection law are violated,” the source explained.
