SHILLONG, June 15: The Centre has sanctioned Rs 951.27 crore for the construction of a 29.03-kilometre Tura Bypass in Meghalaya, aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Tura town and improving overall road connectivity.
This approval was announced by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on social media.
The proposed bypass will connect NH-127B to NH-217 and will be constructed as a two-lane road with paved shoulders.
The project is considered significant due to NH-217’s strategic role in linking Guwahati to Dalu, a town on the India-Bangladesh border that houses an inland customs check-post.
According to the plan, the bypass will begin near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and end at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217.
The new alignment is designed to bypass the congested core of Tura town, where the existing road is narrow and heavily burdened.
Once completed, the project is expected to ease traffic flow, reduce travel time and enhance road safety in the region.
