SHILLONG, June 18: Ahead of the upcoming elections to Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), scheduled to take place next year, the Congress has promised to give a tough fight to the National People’s Party (NPP).
State Congress working president Deborah C. Marak said that the party is bolstering its organisation and that all block committees have been reconstituted to challenge the NPP.
“In each and every constituency, we have the Block Congress Committee, and through the BCC, we are going down to the grassroots to strengthen the organisation,” Marak said.
Asserting that the party is ready to contest the elections, she mentioned that the process of identifying candidates will begin from August to September, and interested candidates will be invited to contest.
Dismissing the NPP’s claims that the Congress is weak in Garo Hills, Marak reminded that the party had won 22 out of 24 constituencies in the last MP elections and that Congress workers are actively engaged in every constituency.
She also acknowledged that the party may have become weak due to several reasons but stressed that the organisation is working hard at the grassroots level and that the results will be evident in the upcoming elections.
Marak also maintained that the Congress will take on the NPP with all its resources, including money and muscle power.
While acknowledging that the NPP would be a tough opponent, she said the party would leave no stone unturned to emerge victorious.
It may be mentioned that the GHADC elections are scheduled to take place in February-March next year, and all political parties have already begun their campaigns informally.
