JOWAI, June 20: In a major step towards promoting digital inclusion in education, 200 computers were distributed to 14 schools in West Jaintia Hills district under the first phase of an ambitious initiative.
Organised by the Office of the West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner under the Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana scheme and funded by the District Mineral Foundation, the programme targets both secondary and higher secondary schools.
The computers were given away by Jowai MLA, Wailadmiki Shylla, to the representatives of the schools during a programme held at the conference room of the DC’s office in Jowai.
During the distribution, Shylla emphasised the importance of digital literacy in contemporary times.
He expressed confidence that the initiative taken by the DC would significantly enhance the quality of education and equip students to thrive in a technology-driven future.
He also encouraged teachers to share any challenges they face, especially regarding basic infrastructure, and assured them of continued support.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh said that, as part of the broader initiative, a certification course provided by Microsoft will be rolled out in the second phase.
Under this programme, one teacher from each school will receive training.
He informed that the initiative aims to expand access to computers and increase enrollment in computer science, which currently sees low uptake in the district.
