SHILLONG, June 25: Members of the Shillong Shreehatta Sammilanee came together on Tuesday to honour the memory of Monotosh Chakraborty, a distinguished academic, respected administrator, and deeply cherished member of the Sammilanee, who passed away on June 21 at Peerless Hospital in Kolkata.
The condolence meeting, held at the KRWO premises here, was attended by close friends, colleagues, former students and members of the Sammilanee, all of whom remembered Chakraborty not only as an erudite scholar but also as a compassionate and devoted human being.
At the meeting, the speakers shared heartfelt memories of their time with Prof. Chakraborty, recalling his wisdom, humility and deep sense of commitment to both education and community service.
Similarly, friends and former colleagues spoke with warmth about his multifaceted personality—his quiet leadership, his passion for sports, his engagement in social work and, above all, his unwavering sense of responsibility towards society.
Floral tributes were also offered and a minute of silence was observed in Prof. Chakraborty’s honour.
The attendees also expressed their profound condolences to the bereaved family and extended thoughts and prayers for strength to his loved ones, students and all who were touched by his presence.
As a lasting tribute, the Sammilanee announced plans to institute a Running Trophy in memory of Late Shri Monotosh Chakraborty, beginning this year.
The modalities for the trophy will be finalised in due course and members expressed hope that it will serve as a fitting homage to a man who dedicated his life to learning, leadership and service.
It may be noted that Prof. Chakraborty had served as Vice Principal and Head of the Department of English at St. Edmund’s College, Shillong, where his decades of contribution to teaching, mentorship and academic leadership left a lasting impact on generations of students and faculty alike.
