TURA, June 29: The Garo Omniscience for Ethnic Renaissance and Awakening (GOERA), a civil society organisation (CSO) from the Garo Hills region, has objected to the release of human excreta into the Manda River at 7th Mile in North Garo Hills (NGH) by a road construction company that has set up its base camp in the area.
The construction company is currently responsible for the widening of NH-217 between Dainadubi and Darugre, with work on the road progressing at a rapid pace. The base camp of the contractors is situated close to the Manda River, beside a major bridge along the route.
“We have been informed that the company has been releasing human waste from the temporarily constructed toilets in the camp into the river. The release of human excreta into the river poses a serious health hazard for those using the river water for the purposes of drinking. This act is not acceptable for the community and needs to be immediately stopped,” it felt.
The organisation has urged the construction company to ensure the adoption of more scientific methods for disposing of human waste so that such forms of water pollution can be avoided.
