SHILLONG, June 30: Former education minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) legislator Lahkmen Rymbui on Monday admitted that government institutions across Meghalaya have seen visible improvements in infrastructure under the current regime.
“When we talk about government institutions in different parts of the state, since 2018 the chief minister has put education as a top priority,” Rymbui said, adding, “That’s why he has sanctioned many schemes to improve the facilities of schools in the state. I am very proud to say that if one visits, it will be seen that the infrastructure befits the claims of the state government.”
Rymbui, who represents the Amlarem constituency, stressed that many government colleges that were long neglected are now witnessing much-needed upgrades. “Most of the government colleges, which for the past thirty, forty years were in shambles, the government is trying to improve,” he said.
While acknowledging that transformation in education cannot happen overnight, he pointed to a planned and phased approach being adopted. “You cannot do everything in five, six years because it involves resources, and the government is trying to do it in a phase-wise manner,” he explained.
Reflecting on developments within his own constituency, he expressed satisfaction with the progress made. “Coming to my constituency, I am very happy that most of the educational infrastructure, whether secondary school or higher secondary school, is very much improved. Yes, there is always scope for improvement,” Rymbui stated.
The former education minister’s remarks come amidst ongoing debates on the status of government-run educational institutions in the state, with different political quarters weighing in on the pace and direction of reforms.
