Meghalaya’s Bijoy Sangma becomes first Indian to head BWA committee

SHILLONG, July 11: Bijoy A Sangma has been appointed Chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights, Peacebuilding and Reconciliation under the Baptist World Alliance (BWA), becoming the first Indian to be elected to the position.
The announcement was made during the 23rd Baptist World Congress held in Brisbane, Australia, on Thursday.
His five-year term will commence on July 13 and continue till 2030.
It may be mentioned that the BWA Commission plays a key role in advocating for religious freedom, social justice and conflict resolution in areas affected by violence and systemic marginalisation.
In addition to chairing the Commission, Sangma will also serve on the BWA Resolutions Committee, which is tasked with framing the Alliance’s positions on global ethical and theological concerns. Sangma holds multiple academic qualifications in law, management and theology. His credentials include an MBA in Entrepreneurship and Strategy, a Bachelor of Law and an MA in Christian Studies. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Management Studies.
A UGC-NET qualified Assistant Professor in Management, he is also a Six Sigma Green Belt professional and has completed management programmes from IIM-Calcutta, alongside training in sustainable development across several countries, including the United States, South Korea and Singapore.
