NONGPOH, July 13: A disturbing rise in reckless motorcycle stunts along National Highway 06 (NH-6), particularly on Sundays, has emerged as a serious public safety concern in Ri-Bhoi. Young bikers, often riding in groups, have turned stretches of the busy highway into an unofficial racetrack, performing high-speed stunts that endanger both themselves and unsuspecting commuters.
In response to the growing threat, officers from the Nongpoh Police Station conducted a special operation on Sunday, targeting the hotspots along NH-6. Several youths were apprehended while attempting dangerous maneuvers and violating road safety regulations.
Despite repeated warnings, public advisories, and enforcement measures — including fines — issued by the Ri-Bhoi Police, such unlawful and hazardous behaviour continues to persist.
The offenders frequently ignore the risks, converting a vital arterial road into a playground for thrill-seeking stunts, especially during weekends.
Tragically, another serious accident was reported during Sunday’s operation. A two-wheeler bearing registration number ML 05 K 3280 lost control due to overspeeding and overturned. Both the rider and the pillion passenger sustained critical injuries and were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
Authorities have renewed their appeal to the public, particularly young riders, to refrain from such dangerous acts. “These stunts not only jeopardise the lives of the bikers themselves but also put innocent road users at grave risk,” said a senior police official.
The Ri-Bhoi Police has vowed to intensify monitoring and enforcement measures, including enhanced surveillance and stricter penalties, to deter such behavior.
As the incidents continue to rise, the community is left grappling with a crucial question: When will these youths realise that highways are not meant for stunts?
Calls are growing for stronger awareness campaigns, tougher consequences, and collective action to restore safety and discipline on Meghalaya’s highways.
