Shillong, July 13: With the 39th National Games set to take place in Shillong for the first time, the Shooting Association of Meghalaya has launched an extensive selection drive to scout and nurture shooting talent from across the state.
The phased trials began on Saturday and continued through Sunday, drawing participants from Ri Bhoi, Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills, and North Garo Hills. Competitors tested their mettle across various disciplines, including 10m, 25m, 50m, and 50m Rifle Prone events.
The trials saw enthusiastic participation from a diverse group of athletes, ranging in age from 13 to 50, highlighting the state’s growing interest in the sport.
President of the Shooting Association of Meghalaya, J.F. Kharshiing, emphasized the significance of this initiative in the build-up to the National Games 2027.
“We are not just preparing to participate, but to perform and win at the highest level.
Our strategy focuses on spotting young talent early and providing them with the necessary training and infrastructure to thrive,” he said.
Kharshiing underlined that the trials serve a dual purpose: they are both a selection mechanism and a vital learning platform for athletes to acclimate to competitive conditions.
“These trials are shaping our shooters—mentally and physically—for what lies ahead.
The National Games will be a proving ground for us, and we aim to demonstrate that Meghalaya can lead the way in shooting sports,” he added.
Officials expressed confidence that with consistent exposure and proper grooming, Meghalaya’s shooters will not only qualify in the sport but also pose a serious challenge for medals when the prestigious national event unfolds in the state on Meghalaya in 2027.
With the trials underway and momentum building, the Shooting Association of Meghalaya is leaving no stone unturned in its mission to prepare a formidable team for the 2027 National Games.
By tapping into talent across age groups and districts, the association is laying a strong foundation for long-term success in the sport.
