JOWAI, July 14: The annual Behdienkhlam festival of the Sein Raij Jowai — a significantly vibrant religious and cultural celebration of the Pnar community, who continue to uphold the indigenous Niamtre faith — came to a colourful close on Monday, drawing large crowds and spirited participation.
The most sacred and central part of the celebration began in the afternoon at the holy pool known as Syiem Aitnar. The ritual commenced with the arrival of the traditional performers, known as Wasan, led by the Pator (religious leader), who initiated prayers and offerings at the sacred site. This was followed by the arrival of the symbolic Symbud Khnong Blai (representative of the divine spirit).
After the rituals, followers of the Niamtre faith descended into the sacred pool to perform the ritual dance.
Various localities, including Panaliar, Dulong, Chilliangraij, Loomiongkjam, Loomkyrwiang, and Iongpiah, along with organisations such as Sein Raij Shillong, Sein Ummulong, Sein Tylli Niamtre Ladthadlaboh, and the Seng Khasi, brought their elaborately decorated ‘rots’ (large ceremonial structures), each bearing messages for the public. The festival serves as a reminder that Behdeinkhlam is not only about warding off disease but also about driving away social evils that trouble society today.
On the concluding day, the festival was graced by the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who served as the chief guest. Also present were Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, Rajya Sabha member WR Kharlukhi, MLA Kyrmen Shylla, MLA Sanbor Shullai, Sein Raij Jowai president Hercules Toi, the Doloi of Jowai Puramon Kynjing, other Doloi (traditional chiefs) from across the Jaintia Hills, the Superintendent of Police and Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills, members of the JHADC, and thousands of spectators from far and near who gathered to witness this unique and sacred traditional festival.
Deputy Chief Minister Dhar, along with other dignitaries, extended their best wishes and prayers for prosperity, good health, and economic well-being to the members of Sein Raij Jowai and the wider Jaintia community.
