SHILLONG, July 16: The state government on Wednesday confirmed the commencement of the admission process for Williamson Sangma State University.
It also said efforts are underway to initiate the process for the university’s Shillong campus, with the Bijni Complex at Laitumkhrah likely to be the location for the temporary setup.
“The admission procedure has begun for the state university, and the process is on to start the admission process for the Shillong campus too,” Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma said.
Responding to queries about the proposed location for the Shillong campus, he revealed that discussions are progressing and a possible out-of-court resolution is on the horizon. “The latest development is that there was a hearing yesterday, and the NEHU has submitted a petition to set up a committee,” he said.
“We will move ahead by setting up a committee and solving it at the table. An out-of-court settlement is a possibility, although it is too early to comment,” Sangma said.
The state government initially identified the Bijni Complex as the temporary location for the Shillong campus. However, this decision was challenged by the NEHU Registrar, who filed a petition in the High Court of Meghalaya.
In response, the government began exploring options for a permanent campus at the New Shillong Township. “If both sides are okay, we want to use the Bijni Complex as the temporary campus for Shillong. So, let the committee move ahead,” Sangma said.
The government remains optimistic that a resolution will be reached soon, allowing academic activities in Shillong to begin without further delay.
