SHILLONG, July 17: Expressing deep concern over the growing menace of reckless driving, particularly involving two-wheelers, UDP leader and Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem has called for urgent and coordinated action to address the safety threat posed by overspeeding bikers, many of whom, he noted, turn public roads into makeshift racing tracks, especially on weekends.
Syiem pointed out that the frequency of accidents in and around Nongpoh has become a matter of grave concern, not just for him as a legislator but also as a resident of the district.
Being a vital entry point to Meghalaya with high vehicular movement, Nongpoh is witnessing an increasing number of traffic violations, particularly by young riders from both within the state and neighbouring regions.
He specifically highlighted that Sundays have become notorious for groups of youths speeding through the area on bikes and scooters, often performing dangerous stunts and disrupting the safety of fellow travellers. Having personally observed such incidents on numerous occasions, Syiem described the trend as alarming and disruptive to public order.
The MLA acknowledged the efforts made by the police, who have conducted regular checks and awareness campaigns, including publicised crackdowns that were widely circulated on social media platforms.
Despite these interventions, he noted that the problem persists, with many offenders continuing to flout traffic norms.
The Nongpoh MLA referred to provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988—along with subsequent amendments—which clearly lay down safety regulations for both drivers and pedestrians. He underscored the need for strict enforcement of these laws, not only to penalise violators but also to safeguard the broader community from the dangers posed by high-speed driving on public roads.
He also appealed to citizens, especially young people, to refrain from using roads as stunt zones, warning that such actions endanger not just the riders themselves but also innocent commuters.
The MLA maintained that this behaviour creates unnecessary obstacles and risks for those travelling to and from the state.
Urging the Police and Transport departments to intensify their vigilance, Syiem called for stringent and sustained action specifically targeting those misusing the roads for racing or stunts, regardless of whether they are from Meghalaya or neighbouring states.
He said that such recklessness must not be tolerated and should be curbed with firm, deterrent measures to preserve public safety and ensure the smooth flow of traffic.
