Shillong, July 21: The Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) has revoked the vending permissions of 34 hawkers in the Khyndai Lad area during an ongoing spot verification exercise on Monday.
The cancellation was due to complaints from fellow hawkers who claimed some of the affected hawkers had family members who already possessed Certificates of Vending (CoVs).
Official sources confirmed that the SMB has issued 285 CoVs so far.
These certified hawkers will be allotted space to operate at two designated vending zones at the MUDA parking lot and the parking area opposite the SBI main branch.
The SMB aims to finalise the list of hawkers eligible for CoVs through this verification process in preparation for their eventual relocation.
The verification process will resume on Tuesday.
Special Officer Subhasis Chakrawarty, appointed by the High Court to oversee the hawkers’ rehabilitation process, clarified that he will not be involved in finalising the list of eligible hawkers.
