Aditya Mehta moves into World 6-Red Snooker knockouts
Manama (Bahrain), July 21: Former World Games gold medallist Aditya Mehta outclassed Ireland’s Jay Chopra to become the sixth Indian to make the knockouts of the IBSF World 6-Red Snooker Championships here on Monday. The 39-year-old Mumbaikar hardly broke a sweat in his 43-5, 40-22, 48-0, 67-0 win over Chopra for his second straight victory in Group N. Kamal Chawla, Manan Chandra, Brijesh Damani, Paras Gupta and Pankaj Advani have already sealed places in the knockout stage. Meanwhile, defending champion Chawla suffered a narrow 3-4 defeat at the hands of China’s Chena Qien in his final Group A match. However, there was no stopping Damani. A key member of the squad that won the Asian Team Snooker last month, the Kolkatan edged out the dangerous Habib Sabah of Bahrain 4-3 to finish as Group J topper. (PTI)
Anush Agarwalla wins dressage event in Germany
Hofgeismar, July 21: India’s Anush Agarwalla won the the dressage event of the Jubilaumsturnier Hofgeismar Open to record his maiden victory with his mare Floriana here. Agarwalla, who represented the country at the Paris Olympics, recorded an impressive 69.891 per cent points to finish atop in the six-member field with each of the other competitors being from Germany. Pia Piotrowski and Katharina Hemmer finished second and third respectively. The win marked the first triumph for the pair at the S level as it also was only the second time Agarwalla and his seven-year-old mare were competing in an event. (PTI)
India A hockey team ends Europe tour with 2-8 loss to Netherlands
Eindhoven (Netherlands), July 21: The India A men’s hockey team ended its campaign in the Europe tour with a 2-8 loss against the Netherlands here. Young Indian midfielder Rajinder Singh and forward Selvam Karthi scored the two goals for India A in the final match on Sunday. India A had lost their previous game against the Netherlands 0-3 last week. India A began the tour on July 8 and played a total of eight matches against five European teams. The team travelled across three cities to compete against some of the top teams in the sport, including world number 1 Netherlands and world number 3 Belgium. (PTI)
With Asia Cup uncertain, PCB’s revenue could take massive hit
Karachi, July 21: With the future of this year’s Asia Cup T20 tournament mired in uncertainty, the Pakistan Cricket Board is bracing for a severe hit to its revenue. The PCB is expecting to earn an estimated 8.8 billion rupees this year from its share of the revenue from the International Cricket Council and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). According to details coming from a reliable Board source, the PCB has outlined an amount of USD 25.9 million (approximately 7.7 billion rupees) during this fiscal year as its share from the ICC. The Board is hoping to earn another 1.16 billion rupees from the Asia Cup and 7.77 million rupees through other international cricket events. “The revenues from these two major sources (ICC and Asia Cup) is very important for the financial health of Pakistan cricket,” one well-informed insider said. According to the insider, PCB CEO Sumair Ahmed, who had gone for the ICC meeting in Singapore, “didn’t get positive responses” from either the BCCI or the boards of Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan over attending the ACC meeting called on July 24 in Dhaka to finalise the Asia Cup arrangements.
