SHILLONG, July 25: The Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) on Thursday observed the Swachhata Pakhwada awareness programme at the Indoor Sports Stadium in Lumparing, with a strong focus on the responsible use and disposal of single-use plastics.
Organised by IIE Guwahati under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in collaboration with Ka Seng Kynthei Lower Lumparing, the event drew participation from around 100 students, representing four schools in the locality.
Environmental activist Nicholas J Kharnami, who was a resource person for the programme, sensitised the students about the hazards of single-use plastics and the importance of adopting eco-friendly alternatives.
He also discussed the use of plastics above 120 microns, which are environmentally compliant and permitted under government guidelines.
On the other hand, State Project Coordinator of IIE Meghalaya, Arti Lyngdoh, said the initiative aimed to instil awareness among young minds and communities about the harmful effects of plastic pollution.
She applauded the insights shared by the resource person, particularly his emphasis on practical alternatives and proper disposal methods.
It may be mentioned that Swachhata Pakhwada is a fortnight-long nationwide campaign focused on sanitation and cleanliness conducted across various government departments and public institutions as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
The event encourages active participation from all sections of society in building a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
