Shillong, July 25: Shillong Lajong FC will kick off their 134th Durand Cup campaign on home turf as they take on Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM FA) in the Group E opener this Saturday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong. The highly anticipated clash is scheduled to begin at 4:00 PM.
The I-League outfit will look to build on their impressive 2024 run, where they pulled off a memorable upset over East Bengal in the quarter-finals before falling short against eventual champions NorthEast United FC in the semi-finals.
With the home crowd behind them, Lajong will be hoping for a strong start in this year’s edition.
Led by Brazilian striker Douglas Tardin, the Red Dragons boast a balanced squad blending youthful local talent with experienced professionals. Local favourites such as Figo Syndai, Phrangki Buam, and Kenstar Kharshong are expected to play pivotal roles in the side’s campaign.
Head coach Birendra Thapa expressed confidence ahead of the opening fixture.
“We’re thrilled to start our Durand Cup journey at home. The players are in great shape, the atmosphere in the camp is extremely positive, and everyone is focused on giving their best,” Thapa said.
Their opponents, Malaysian Armed Forces, will be making their Durand Cup debut this season.
Representing the military establishment of Malaysia, ATM FA brings a reputation for discipline, organisation, and physicality — traits that could pose a serious challenge to any side in the group.
“Our team is proud to represent the Malaysian Armed Forces on this stage,” said assistant coach Masrizar bin Mizalan on the eve of the match. “We’ve worked hard in training, and the players are determined to showcase disciplined and purposeful football. The first match is crucial, and we aim to start strong.”
Group E is expected to be fiercely competitive, with NorthEast United FC and Rangdajied United FC also in the mix. With only the top teams advancing, every point will be vital, making Saturday’s clash a high-stakes affair for both sides.
All matches of the 134th Durand Cup will be broadcast live on Sony Sports Network (Sony Ten 2 HD) and streamed on the SonyLiv platform.
With expectations soaring and the stakes high, Saturday’s showdown promises to be a thrilling curtain-raiser for Group E.
For Shillong Lajong, the familiar roar of the home crowd could be the spark that ignites another memorable Durand Cup run. But with ATM FA eager to make a strong first impression, fans can expect a gripping contest where every moment counts.
