SHILLONG, July 26: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah has prohibited rampant littering and indiscriminate waste disposal along the Shillong-Sohra road and other popular tourist locations across Shillong city and the district.
According to the DC, the decision has been necessitated following reports of widespread littering by tourists, particularly at scenic viewpoints and key attractions along this vital tourism corridor.
The order said that the disposal of plastic waste, food packaging and other materials has raised serious concerns about environmental pollution and the degradation of the district’s natural beauty.
Kurbah stated that if left unchecked, such littering could severely impact the aesthetic and ecological health of the region.
In response, the DC prohibited all acts of indiscriminate waste disposal by visitors and has warned that violations will attract penal provisions under Section 223 of the BNS and other applicable sections as deemed appropriate.
“In view of the urgency of the matter,” the DC said, “this order is being passed ex parte and shall come into immediate effect and remain in force until further orders.”
