JOWAI, July 27: The Panaliar locality of Jowai, having officially taken over the management of the Syntu Ksiar Fish Sanctuary located along the Myntdu river, conducted an inspection on Saturday following complaints from several community members about illegal fishing in the area.
The sanctuary is now under the full management of the Panaliar Tourism & Environmental Development Society (PTEDS), which oversees all activities and conservation efforts.
In response to the reported violations, the Executive Committee of Panaliar, expressing serious concern, has announced a fine of Rs 10,000 for anyone caught fishing in the prohibited area designated by the village. Additionally, a reward of ₹5,000 will be offered to anyone who reports such violations. The identity of informants will be kept confidential.
Those found violating the rules will not only be fined but may also face legal action and imprisonment, as per the law, stated Panaliar Headman Riquoma Rq. Laloo.
The village authorities have urged the public to cooperate in maintaining the sanctuary’s cleanliness and to respect the riverbanks and natural surroundings. They have also encouraged locals to stay vigilant and report any instances of damage or prohibited activities without fear, assuring full support and protection for informants.
Panaliar further appeals to both locals and tourists to treat the sanctuary and its environment with respect and care, ensuring it remains unpolluted and undisturbed. While the PTEDS welcomes visitors, it strictly prohibits those who intend to cause harm or engage in banned activities.
