SHILLONG, July 27: Padma Shri awardee Silbi Passah was conferred with the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Award during a programme held at the U Soso Tham Auditorium on Sunday, marking the 10th death anniversary of the Missile Man of India.
The event, organised by the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Foundation of Meghalaya, witnessed the felicitation of several distinguished personalities. Among the awardees were Dr Adorable Kharbamon, visiting medical specialist at Bethany Hospital; Kalpana Roy, acclaimed writer; and Manisha Sharma, a state cricketer.
A key highlight of the programme was the release of Dr Kharbamon’s book titled My Encounter with the Missile Man of India.
Meritorious students were awarded scholarships of Rs 2,000 each, while winners of the Art, Model, Craft, Quiz, and Essay competitions — held earlier in the month — were also felicitated.
The event also featured a poets’ meet, where well-known poets from Shillong paid tribute to Dr Kalam’s enduring legacy through verse and reflection.
The function was graced by Commissioner and Secretary BDR Tiwari as the chief guest, while Munish Singh, Director of Art and Culture, NE Zone, served as the guest of honour.
Students from various schools across Shillong enthusiastically participated in the seminar, expressing their admiration for Dr Kalam through heartfelt speeches and presentations.
The programme began with an opening song by members of the Foundation, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, a welcome address by state president Falguni Chakraborty, and patriotic songs in honour of Dr Kalam’s memory.
