Shillong, July 29: Shillong Lajong FC delivered a commanding performance to overcome Rangdajied United FC 3-1 in a pulsating Group Stage clash of the 134th Durand Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday, stamping their authority in the highly-anticipated Shillong Derby.
Backed by a vocal home crowd, Lajong combined disciplined build-up play with clinical finishing to secure a crucial win that boosts their chances of reaching the knockout stages. The Red Dragons, who are among the most well-supported clubs in the region, showed maturity and tactical superiority to navigate a game that swung in momentum but ultimately tilted in their favour.
Lajong started the match in their preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, designed to retain possession and create overloads on the flanks. Their approach was in stark contrast to Rangdajied’s aggressive 4-3-3 setup, which focused on direct play and swift transitions. The contrasting tactics made for an entertaining first half filled with end-to-end action.
Although Rangdajied pressed with intensity, it was Lajong who maintained a slight edge in possession (53%) and strung together more completed passes (349 compared to Rangdajied’s 294), indicating a more measured and composed game plan. After both sides squandered early half-chances, the breakthrough came in first-half stoppage time. Following a corner, Rangdajied’s defence failed to clear their lines, and Lajong’s Mylliempdah pounced on the loose ball to fire home, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead going into the break.
The second half started with renewed urgency from Rangdajied, and their efforts were rewarded in the 58th minute. Mebanshngain Kurkalang capitalised on a quick attacking sequence and calmly slotted the ball past the Lajong keeper to make it 1-1, sending their supporters into a frenzy. However, the joy was short-lived. Just eight minutes later, Lajong restored their advantage. This time, it was Lyngdoh who finished off a flowing move with a composed strike, once again exposing Rangdajied’s disjointed defensive structure. As frustration crept into Rangdajied’s ranks, their play became increasingly reckless. Their 21 fouls and two yellow cards disrupted their own rhythm and gave Lajong numerous opportunities to control the tempo. The match was put to bed in the 80th minute when Lajong launched a swift counterattack. Kharbuli and his teammate exchanged quick passes just outside the box before the former calmly slotted home their third goal.
